How to use the BMR Calculator
Basal metabolic rate is the energy your body burns at complete rest. The BMR calculator estimates it with two common equations.
What you need to enter
- Sex
- Age (years)
- Height (cm)
- Weight (kg)
The formula
Mifflin-St Jeor: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5 for men, or − 161 for women. Harris-Benedict uses different coefficients.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator:
- Sex: Male
- Age (years): 30
- Height (cm): 175
- Weight (kg): 72
| BMR (Mifflin-St Jeor) | 1,669 kcal/day |
| BMR (Harris-Benedict) | 1,722 kcal/day |
Tips for better results
- Multiply BMR by an activity factor to estimate daily needs.
- Use it as a starting point and adjust to real results.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Eating at BMR alone, which ignores daily activity.
- Treating the estimate as exact.
