How to use the Debt-to-Income Ratio Calculator
The DTI calculator shows what share of your monthly gross income goes to debt payments, which lenders use to judge loans.
Open the Debt-to-Income Ratio Calculator →
What you need to enter
- Gross monthly income ($)
- Housing payment ($)
- Other monthly debts ($)
The formula
DTI = total monthly debt payments ÷ gross monthly income. Front-end DTI uses only housing costs.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator:
- Gross monthly income ($): 6000
- Housing payment ($): 1500
- Other monthly debts ($): 500
| Total DTI | 33.33% |
| Front-end (housing) DTI | 25% |
| Assessment | Good (≤ 36%) |
Tips for better results
- Many lenders prefer 36% or lower, though some accept up to 43% or more.
- Pay down small debts to lower the ratio.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using net income.
- Leaving out minimum card payments.
