How to use the Inflation Calculator
The inflation calculator shows how a steady yearly price rise changes what your money buys over time.
Open the Inflation Calculator →
What you need to enter
- Amount today ($)
- Average inflation (% / year)
- Years
The formula
Future price = amount × (1 + inflation)^years. Purchasing power of today's money = amount ÷ (1 + inflation)^years.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator:
- Amount today ($): 1000
- Average inflation (% / year): 3
- Years: 10
| Same purchasing power in future | $1,343.92 |
| Value of today's money in future | $744.09 |
| Total price rise | 34.39% |
Tips for better results
- Use a long-run average, such as 2–3%, for planning.
- Compare your savings rate to inflation to see if your money really grows.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using this year's unusually high or low rate for decades.
- Forgetting that wages may also rise with inflation.
