How to use the Sales Tax Calculator
The sales tax calculator adds tax to a price, or removes it from a total to find the pre-tax price.
Open the Sales Tax Calculator →
What you need to enter
- Calculate
- Amount ($)
- Sales tax rate (%)
The formula
Total = price × (1 + rate). Pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate). Tax = total − pre-tax price.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator:
- Calculate: Total with tax (from pre-tax price)
- Amount ($): 100
- Sales tax rate (%): 8.25
| Total price | $108.25 |
| Sales tax | $8.25 |
Tips for better results
- Use your combined state, county and city rate.
- To remove tax, always divide, do not subtract the rate from the total.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Subtracting the percentage from the total instead of dividing.
- Using the wrong local rate.
