How to use the Bandwidth Calculator
The bandwidth calculator estimates download time from file size and connection speed.
Open the Bandwidth Calculator →
What you need to enter
- File size
- Size unit
- Connection speed (Mbps)
The formula
Time = file size (in megabits) ÷ speed in Mbps. 1 byte = 8 bits.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator:
- File size: 2
- Size unit: MB
- Connection speed (Mbps): 50
| Download time | 0.32 s |
| Speed | 6.25 MB/s |
| Data per hour | 22.5 GB |
Tips for better results
- Real speeds are lower than advertised.
- Wi-Fi and servers affect speed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing Mbps and MBps.
- Ignoring overhead.
